What is a URL slug?

The slug is the human-readable part of a URL that identifies a specific page. In example.com/blog/url-slug-best-practices the slug is url-slug-best-practices. WordPress, Shopify, Ghost, Webflow and most other CMSs generate one from the title, but the automatic version often keeps stop words, dates, emoji residue or accented letters that turn into ugly percent-encoding like caf%C3%A9.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use hyphens or underscores in URLs?
Hyphens. Google recommends hyphens to separate words in URLs. Underscores are fine for file names in code but less clear for search engines and readers.
How long should a URL slug be?
There is no fixed rule, but most good slugs are 3 to 6 words and under about 60 characters. Shorter slugs are easier to read, share and remember.
Should I remove stop words from slugs?
Often, yes, because words like "the" and "of" add length without meaning. Keep them when removing them changes the meaning or makes the slug unreadable.
Can I generate slugs for many titles at once?
Yes. Paste one title per line and you get one slug per line in the same order.
