Zalgo text is ordinary text with dozens of combining diacritical marks stacked on each letter, so it seems to leak above and below the line: Z̴̢̛a̸̛͎l̵̡̛g̸̨͝o̶̡͠. The name comes from an internet horror meme from the late 2000s, where corrupted, "glitching" text signalled that something sinister was taking over. Today it is used for horror and Halloween posts, gaming usernames, memes, and glitch-art designs.
Unicode has a range of characters (U+0300 to U+036F) called combining marks — accents such as ◌́ ◌̃ ◌̈ that are designed to attach to the previous letter. Normally a letter gets one, as in é. Nothing in Unicode stops you from attaching twenty. Each mark is drawn relative to the same letter, so they pile up vertically and spill into the lines above and below. The generator picks marks at random from three groups:
Press Regenerate for a different random arrangement of the same text.
Every mark is a character, so zalgo text gets long fast. A ten-letter word at maximum intensity can be well over 200 characters. Comment boxes, usernames and posts with a length limit may cut it off or reject it, and some platforms strip excessive combining marks automatically. Use Mini for usernames and short fields, and check the result with the Character Counter.
Switch the mode to Remove zalgo and paste the corrupted text. The tool decomposes it, strips every combining mark and recomposes it, giving back readable letters. Note that this also removes accents that were part of the original words (é becomes e), because accents are combining marks too.
Heavy zalgo text can overlap other messages in chats, is unreadable for screen readers, and is often treated as spam by moderators. Keep it to short, playful uses.
